Coast Guard Hero Rescues Golden Retriever After 350-Foot Cliff Fall
New Year's Day Hike Takes a Scary Turn
A golden retriever named Leo got a second chance at life when the United States Coast Guard rescued him after he fell off a 350-foot cliff. The scary event happened on New Year's Day when Alexa and her fiancé, Cody, took their 3-year-old furry friend hiking along the Oregon Coast at Ecola State Park.
During their outdoor adventure, Leo broke free from his owners and accidentally slipped off the edge of the cliff. He landed on a narrow spot about 100 feet below the top. Alexa and Cody acted fast and called emergency services right away.
Rescue Mission Begins
The first team to respond was Fire and Rescue, but they hit a roadblock. The steep cliff made it impossible for them to rappel down to where Leo was stuck. That's when the US Coast Guard aircrew stepped in to help.
The Coast Guard helicopter arrived at the scene and sent their expert rescue swimmer down to Leo's location. The rescuer knew just what to do with the scared pup.
A Gentle Approach Saves the Day
Understanding that Leo was likely scared and confused, the rescue swimmer approached him slowly and carefully. The rescuer took time to pet Leo, helping the dog feel safe and comfortable before moving him.
Luckily, Leo was still breathing and responsive despite his fall. Once Leo felt at ease, the rescue swimmer placed him in a special basket. The helicopter crew then carefully lifted both the rescuer and Leo back up to safety.
Happy Reunion and Recovery
The helicopter flew to the nearby parking lot where Cody and Alexa were anxiously waiting. The family had an emotional reunion as Leo was returned to his relieved owners.
Leo spent that night at the emergency vet for a thorough check-up. The amazing news is that despite falling 100 feet down a cliff, Leo only suffered minor injuries. The veterinarians expect him to make a full recovery.
A Grateful Family
Leo is now back home, safe and sound with his loving family. Alexa and Cody have expressed their deepest thanks to the Coast Guard and all the first responders who helped save their beloved pet.
This remarkable rescue shows the dedication of emergency teams who are ready to help not just people, but our four-legged family members too.
