New Retirement Haven for Senior Dogs Opens in Wisconsin Farm

A 36-acre farm in Wisconsin has been transformed into a retirement paradise for senior dogs. With no cages, plenty of hiking trails, and lots of love, these elderly canines are finding joy in their golden years.

A Final Chapter of Love: Retirement Home for Senior Dogs Opens in Wisconsin

A new sanctuary for senior and special needs dogs has opened its doors in Baraboo, Wisconsin. Jane's Journey Home for Dogs provides a loving environment for older canines who have nowhere else to go.

Born from a Legacy of Love

The retirement home was created to honor Jane Barton, who passed away from cancer in 2013. Jane was a lifelong animal lover with a special place in her heart for dogs. When faced with her diagnosis, she made it her mission to create a lasting legacy centered around her passion for canines.

Before her passing, Jane set aside funds for this special cause and entrusted her son Larry with bringing her vision to life. For Larry, it was essential to create something meaningful that would honor his mother for years to come.

A Decade in the Making

Larry spent ten years carefully planning the sanctuary. In 2022, he found and purchased the perfect location – a 36-acre farm that now serves as the retirement home.

The property features extensive hiking trails perfect for dog walks. The barn has been transformed into a cozy home-like environment for the senior dogs. One notable feature: there are absolutely no cages anywhere on the property.

A Haven for Dogs Without Options

Jane's Journey Home primarily welcomes dogs who have run out of alternatives. Many residents have lost their owners to death or illness. Others have medical conditions or advanced age that make them unlikely candidates for adoption through traditional shelters.

At the retirement home, each dog receives:

  • Personalized veterinary care
  • Spacious areas to roam freely
  • Abundant affection and attention

Transformations Through Care

The impact of this loving environment has already become evident. Volunteers report remarkable changes in the dogs' behavior and emotional well-being. Dogs who initially appeared withdrawn and melancholy have blossomed – playing with toys, getting the "zoomies" (bursts of energy), and actively engaging with volunteers and visitors.

More Than Just a Dog Sanctuary

Larry envisions Jane's Journey Home becoming a valuable community asset. He wants it to be a place where local residents can visit, interact with the dogs, and share in the joy of giving these senior canines a dignified final chapter.

This approach creates a mutually beneficial situation – the dogs receive the companionship they crave, while community members experience the unique emotional rewards of connecting with senior pets.
