From Stray to Adventure Buddy: The Dog Who Chose Her Forever Home
The Unexpected Follower
When a stray dog followed a couple for 4 days during their bike tour abroad, they didn't know what to do at first. They thought the dog would eventually go her own way. Maggie and Maeve from Chicago were biking in Montenegro, an area with many stray dogs.
During a stop for bike repairs, one friendly dog approached them. Though she was covered in fleas and ticks, the couple gave her some attention and a snack before continuing their journey.
A Persistent Companion
What happened next surprised them. The dog followed them for miles and miles. Even when Maggie and Maeve set up camp for the night and woke up the next morning, she was still there. This pattern continued for four whole days, with the stray never falling far behind.
They started calling her Monte, after Montenegro. As the days passed, Maggie and Maeve grew more and more attached to their four-legged shadow.
A Turning Point
The couple knew they needed to at least get Monte to a vet to treat her fleas and ticks. When they took her in, the vet suggested spay surgery. Maggie and Maeve thought about paying for the procedure and then finding someone local to adopt Monte.
But something had changed. The thought of leaving Monte behind made both of them too sad. They had fallen in love with this determined dog who had chosen them.
The Journey Home
They went forward with the surgery and found a local person to foster Monte during her recovery. Bringing a dog home from another country isn't simple, but Maggie and Maeve were committed. They got Monte her own passport and made sure she was cleared for travel back to the United States with them.
Living Her Best Life
Today, Monte has a completely different life than she did as a stray in Montenegro. She lives in a cozy home in Illinois with Maggie and Maeve. Best of all, she joins them on all their outdoor adventures.
The dog who once had to follow a bike for days just to have human companionship now has a forever family who takes her everywhere. Monte didn't just find owners – she found her perfect match in two outdoor enthusiasts who love adventure as much as she does.
