Dog Chooses His Own Home: Scout's Journey to Meadow Brook Nursing Home
The Great Escape Artist
After escaping from a shelter five times and heading straight to a nursing home, a dog in Michigan was finally adopted by the place he chose as his home. Scout is now such a beloved resident at the Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility that he even won the Resident of the Month award.
Scout was picked up as a stray who showed many signs of physical abuse from a previous home. Once at the shelter, it quickly became clear that Scout was an escape artist. On one of his first nights, he managed to escape by scaling multiple tall fences. He then made his way a quarter mile down the street to the nursing home.
Finding His Calling
Upon reaching the nursing home, Scout strolled right in through the automatic doors and made himself comfortable on the couch in the lobby. A nurse found him and called the shelter, who realized they were missing him.
Scout was brought back to the shelter, but the next night, the exact same thing happened. And then a few nights later, he did it again. It was clear that Scout felt a real sense of safety and belonging in the nursing home.
A Match Made in Heaven
After the third time that Scout sauntered into the lobby like it was already his home, an administrator decided that it was just meant to be. The nursing home adopted him.
Bringing Joy and Comfort
Now Scout gives the residents, many of whom have had to leave pets behind, a sense of normalcy and comfort. His presence creates a homey atmosphere in what can sometimes feel like a clinical setting.
One of the current residents says that Scout always lets you pet him, and he'll let you talk to him if you need someone to talk to. His patience and gentle nature make him the perfect companion for the elderly residents.
Scout's story shows us that sometimes animals know exactly where they belong. His determination to find his forever home led him to a place where he could not only receive love but give it back to those who need it most.
